Use your smart phone to report drivers parking illegally A new app catches people without permits in handicapped spots

A Vancouver man is using smart phone technology to catch handicap parking cheaters.
Campbell Macdonald, with Parkingmobility, created the app because his business partner, who has cerebral palsy, constantly struggles with drivers illegally parking in handicap spots without permits. "It's very frustrating, but it's not just him. This is not a small isolated problem. If it does not affect you I'm sure it affects a number of people in your life."

The application is easy to use; if you see a car parked in a handicap space with no permit you take a picture with your smart phone and send it to Macdonald's website. "It allows people to take pictures of cars and submit them to us and we then upload that information with user information. We have a GPS reading so we know where the offense took place, we have a time stamp so we know when it occurred."

Macdonald then forwards the photos along with the information to the city. The city is only taking the information on a trial basis, it won't issue parking tickets through a third party just yet. Macdonald is hopeful the idea will catch on adding studies have shown up to 20 per cent of drivers park at some point in handicap spots with out a permit.
