400 parking bays in Lincoln could raise 540k

The county council wants to introduce 436 short-stay bays in all six districts, including Lincoln city centre.

If the plan goes ahead, streets such as Silver Street and Clasketgate in Lincoln could have new bays drawn up and ticket machines installed.

The news comes as the authority prepares to take over responsibility for parking enforcement next year.

This new function will cost the council about 1.2 million a year, including the bill for employing wardens, managing residents' parking schemes and monitoring double yellow lines.

The proposed new parking bays will cost 250,000 to set up but are expected to bring in 540,000 a year.

This means the council is still looking for ways to fill the 660,000 annual deficit.

Divisional highways officer Brian Thompson said in a report that on-street pay and display parking was a sound way to start filling the funding gap.

"The new pay and display on-street parking spaces would be in existing prime, town centre locations and in most cases would replace existing limited, waiting parking locations," he said.
