Carmanah Wins Environmental Excellence Award
Carmanah Technologies Corporation is pleased to announce that it has been awarded the 2011 VIATec Environmental Excellence Award.
The award, as defined by the Victoria Advanced Technology Council, is for a company that has significantly demonstrated the environmental and economic benefits of sustainable technologies through the design/manufacture or implementation of green technologies which benefit the environment and human health and safety.
By putting solar power to work in a variety of ways, Carmanahs complete range of solar powered aviation, marine, obstruction, and traffic signals, as well as solar powered outdoor street and area lights, mobile Go Power products, and the grid-tie solar systems, all help organizations achieve economic benefits while simultaneously being more sustainable.
Carmanah also practices what it preaches. Carmanahs Facility Manager, Allan Baxter, recently led an effort to implement a waste reduction and recycling program at Carmanahs head office. Today, Carmanah is the first large technology company in Victoria to go effectively waste free, achieving a 99% reduction in waste production. Prior to the program, Company operations would have resulted in the equivalent of twelve dump trucks of waste going into the local landfill each year. After the recycling program was implemented, the amount of waste the Company sends to the local landfill has been reduced to the equivalent of four household bins. Ted Lattimore, Carmanahs CEO, states, This is a great achievement for Carmanah and an excellent example to other companies about the difference they can make locally. All of us here at Carmanah have had to change our behaviour towards how we handle waste. It has been a great growth experience for us all and has made us all think twice before we throw anything out. This has resulted in an attitude change that affects how we approach all activities Carmanah gets involved in."
