City celebrates official opening of Carlisle Street Parking Garage

The wait is over and visitors to downtown St. Catharines are once again putting their cars in park in the Carlisle Street Parking Garage.
The newest infrastructure addition to the citys core was celebrated at an official ceremony today, marking the end of two years of construction on the 600-space car park and heralding yet another key phase in the revitalization of the downtown.

The $27.9-million garage was funded jointly by the federal government, the province and the City.

I am very pleased to see our governments investment produce tangible results like the new Carlisle St. Parking Garage, St. Catharines MP Rick Dykstra. This impressive new structure will play a large role in the ongoing revitalization of our downtown.

The McGuinty government is pleased to have helped build the new garage, an important component in revitalizing our downtown, St. Catharines MPP Jim Bradley said.

The Carlisle Street parking garage, which is being applauded by our business community, makes it more convenient for people to visit the downtown core, as well as support our future Performing Arts Centre and spectator facility, Mayor Brian McMullan said. This state-of-the-art facilitys environmental features demonstrate our commitment to green initiatives, which lessen our carbon footprint for future generations.

The new Carlisle Street Parking Garage will be certified to Leadership in Environmental and Energy Design (LEED) silver standards, one of the highest green ratings for a building. Bike racks, a green roof, greywater collection, water bottle refilling stations, LED lights, carpool and hybrid vehicle parking, and an energy efficient HVAC system are just some of the environmentally friendly features of the garage. About 95 per cent of the garages previous incarnation, demolished in 2010, was recycled.

It is also home to retail space, above and below-ground parking and a lighted alleyway enabling pedestrians to move between Carlisle Street and Garden Park with ease.
