Electronic parking sensors for CBD

Electronic parking sensors in the Perth CBD could be in operation next month, but the City of Perth claims it has not planned for any additional revenue from the hi-tech devices.
The parking sensors will be installed below ground into individual bays that are then tripped when cars arrive. Parking inspectors on patrol will receive wireless messages from the units telling them which cars have overstayed.

The sensors will be installed in October and November, the City of Perth said last week.

But chief executive Frank Edwards said the council had not planned for any additional revenue from the scheme. The objective of this project is to ensure better turnover of short-term bays in the CBD to enable people wanting to make a short visit to the city to find a parking space, Mr Edwards said. With all the proposed public information we would anticipate that people who park will be fully aware that when they use the bays containing sensors, that overstaying will be more easily detected.

To inform the public of the new technology, there will be signs in the street indicating there is electronic surveillance of the parking bay.

Brochures will also be distributed to businesses for them to hand to their customers, Mr Edwards said. When we do intend to turn them (the sensors) on we will inform the public of the date and have a period of time, probably a week, when we will only issue cautions, he said.

Meanwhile, the Parking Local Law 2010, passed by the City of Perth earlier this year is still a number of months away. The new law proposes significant increases to modified penalties for 28 parking offences. In some cases fines will double, but for certain offences they will treble.

Following the submission period, some small changes are likely to be made before it goes back to the council... it then needs to go to be gazetted into law, Mr Edwards said. This could take some months.
