Green Parking bill appears on track
Davidson County car owners who drive fuel-efficient vehicles could
soon pay $10 for a sticker that would allow them to park for free at
downtown meters.

The bill comes from Councilman Jason Holleman and Councilman Mike Jameson. After facing a series of questions from Metro Public Works, which will implement the new policy, the bill has received the blessing from the Traffic and Parking Commission and Mayor Karl Deans administration.
According to the bill, a vehicle would qualify for a green parking sticker if it is scores a 16 or higher on the Environmental Protection Agencys Green Vehicle Guide. Vehicle owners would pay $10 to the County Clerk, which would then remit $5 to Public Works for enforcement. The measure wont roll out until next fiscal year, which begins July 1, 2011.
Traffic and Parking approved the measure with a narrow 43 vote and the bill will be up for a vote at Tuesdays council meeting. The Dean administration offered its support for the bill last week as well.
Hes generally supportive of ways to encourage people to drive sustainable vehicles, Deans spokeswoman Janel Lacy said last week. With this proposal, there were some issues to be worked out like what the revenue impacts would be. At this point, it seems like the council members are working with Public Works and its headed in a good direction.
Deans Green Ribbon committee actually recommended this very same measure in its report last year.
