Airport Converts to Energy-Saving Lights in Parking Lots
Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is so bright you may have to wear shades! Airport officials today announced plans to replace each of Hartsfield-Jackson's 4,342 210-watt metal-halide fixtures with Cooper Lighting's 80-watt light-emitting diode (LED) fixtures in the north and south covered parking lots.
"We are happy to provide greatly improved lighting for our passengers using these parking facilities," Aviation General Manager Louis Miller said. "LED lights are brighter, last longer and use less energy than other options, providing savings for the Airport and reducing our carbon footprint."
"Replacing parking garage lighting with more energy-efficient options is one of the most practical upgrades a city can make to save energy, reduce costs and lower CO2 emissions," said Mark Eubanks, President, Cooper Lighting. "This project has been a great opportunity to showcase how Cooper's innovative LED products can increase overall efficiencies and performance to provide a safe and well-lit environment, while helping the City of Atlanta save almost $500,000 each year in energy costs."
The environmental impact of the transition to the LED lights is equivalent to taking more than 600 cars off the road.
"Long-term sustainability is important for everything we do with our city assets," said Denise Quarles, the City of Atlanta's director of sustainability. "As a key asset to the continued growth of this great city, it is only fitting that we make improvements that will benefit everyone who uses our Airport. This lighting project marks only the beginning of great changes to come."
In addition, the Airport's innovations unit designed a sleeve device that provides a working platform and shield for vehicles in the parking decks.
"The sleeve will allow installation to continue safely around parked cars, resulting in no loss of revenue and no impact on the availability of parking spaces for customers," Miller said.
All new lights are expected to be installed by April.
