Parking education is needed: Parking-related crashes account for 20% of automobile insurance claims.Drivers learn the 'rules of the road,' but too little about the rules of parking. That will soon change.
Drivers learn the 'rules of the road,The International Parking Institute (IPI) and the Mid-Atlantic Foundation for Safety and Education, affiliated with AAA Mid-Atlantic, today announced they will collaborate on the development of parking education programs for drivers.
The Mid-Atlantic Foundation for Safety and Education is dedicated to educating, training, and raising the level of travel and traffic safety awareness. The International Parking Institute is the world's largest parking association.
"Being knowledgeable about parking is an essential and often undervalued part of being a good driver," explains Shawn Conrad, executive director of IPI. Conrad cites statistics from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety showing that parking-related crashes account for more than 20 percent of automobile insurance claims.
Information covered in the new program will range from safety and security issues to how to parallel park, park on a hill, exit spaces and more. In addition, respect for parking laws and checklists to aid simple but important parking basics will be covered. The program is also likely to expand to include parking information for specific groups, such as seniors and teen drivers.
Conrad anticipates that the new program will be officially launched at the 2012 IPI Conference & Expo in Phoenix, Ariz., in June, with the first program materials published at that time.
"Parking isn't given enough emphasis in driver training," explains Norman Grimm, Director of Safety Services for the Mid-Atlantic Foundation for Safety and Education. "We see this as a pilot program that may well have broader implications for all driver education. We certainly believe it is a worthwhile step toward increasing safety for drivers and pedestrians."' but too little about the rules of parking. That will soon change.
