Mexican city considers using eMoney solutions for new parking meters
Mexican residents could soon be able to use eMoney solutions to pay for their parking fees, according to reports.
Officials from the city of Durango are considering replacing its existing parking meters and installing new terminals which accept smart cards, reports The Durango Herald.
Roy Peterson, the city's director of general services, claimed the new technology would be more convenient for motorists as they would not have to have the correct change.
"It's really about customer convenience," he told the news provider. "You don't carry $1.80 (0.09) around in your pocket all the time."
Should the new proposals come into force, the new meters would be powered by solar-power technology. The current meters are operated by a nine-volt battery which is replaced once a year.
Solar-powered meters were recently installed throughout Seattle, while Durango has also previously invested in the technology.
Three of the city's waste compressors are powered by the sun and a recreation centre has been fitted with solar panels.
