West Hollywood to get 2.6M futuristic parking garage

The city awarded a $2.6 million contract to a company called Unitronics to design and build the 200-vehicle "storage and retrieval system" at West Hollywood City Hall.

"City staff, residents and the City Council continue to work in upgrading the city's infrastructure to make sure our city meets the needs of a dynamic community," West Hollywood Mayor John J. Duran said. "The expansion of City Hall and the building of the new automated parking garage not only will provide for a better experience to residents and visitors, it will also provide for much needed additional parking while reducing the carbon footprint that a `traditional' parking structure would generate otherwise."

City officials said the automated garage will be able to hold as many as three times the number of cars in typical structures. Motorists will pull into the ground level of the structure, and conveyors and lifts will move the vehicle into a parking space, without need of a driver.

The garage is expected to take up less space and take less time to build, since most parts are pre-fabricated and assembled on site, according to the city.
