FAAC and Nedap Identification Systems Will Modernize Regulation of Vehicle Access in Antwerp’s City Center

Nedap’s MOOV City Access platform and vehicle identification solutions will be implemented into the FAAC vehicle regulation solution

The Belgian city of Antwerp has opted to equip its city with a modernized city access solution. This solution, which limits traffic flows, was chosen in order to keep its city centre safe and liveable for both residents and visitors. Nedap’s MOOV City Access platform and vehicle identification solutions will be implemented into the FAAC vehicle regulation solution to regulate vehicle access and as well optimize the traffic flows.

Antwerp, One of the Largest and Most Visited Cities in Belgium

Antwerp is a known major destination in Belgium and has about 529,000 inhabitants, making it the second largest and one of the most visited cities in Belgium. Besides its size, the city of Antwerp is also known for its historical city centre, many sights and its main shopping street De Meir. De Meir is the most important shopping areas in Belgium, with more than 100 shops and department stores and near public transportation. All these aspects make Antwerp the place to be for tourists and the pride of all her residents.

Limit Traffic Flows to Maintain and Increase the Pedestrian-Friendliness

To guarantee and safeguard the attractiveness of the city, the city of Antwerp chose to limit traffic flows and regulate vehicle access in several areas within its city centre. By prohibiting unnecessary traffic and adding safety measurements, the city will keep and increase its “Pedestrian-Friendly” streets. These areas will still stay accessible for authorized vehicles and drivers such as local residents, suppliers, licensed taxis, emergency and municipal services. These points need to be taken into consideration when planning routes and regulating traffic flows from and towards these areas.

A Modernized City Access Control Solution Tall brown and glass building with parking access control

To this day, the city was equipped with automatic bollards and a system that required a lot of manual actions. To make this process more efficient and simplified for its users, the city of Antwerp decided to change and modernize its system. This decision was translated into a completely new solution created and provided by business partners FAAC and Nedap Identification Systems. The Nedap MOOV software and a total of 50 new installations with FAAC bollards will be installed by Krautli, a Belgian company known for its high-quality installations of parking access control systems.

One Total Solution Provided by Nedap Identification Systems and FAAC

Besides being the provider of the bollard installation in this complete city access control project, FAAC is also the system integrator, being responsible for the integration between software and hardware. The MOOV City Access software and controllers allow authorized vehicles to access the city in a safe and seamless way. This will be made possible thanks to the Nedap long-range identification readers.

Nedap’s all-in-one license plate camera ‘ANPR LUMO will be used to identify user groups with temporary or incidentally access rights, based on license plate recognition. Think of suppliers and municipal services who can be given access at predefined locations, on specific assigned days and time zones, regulating vehicle access to the city by reason. In addition, Nedap’s invexs 190 reader is also used. The combined card and PIN code reader will be used as a backup when a service or user uses another vehicle.

Integration With ROMBIT's License Holder System

Furthermore, the ROMBIT licensing system will be integrated into the total solution. As a result, license holders are automatically linked to the MOOV software, so that fewer actions are required to grant access to license holders. The licensees will be identified by number plate recognition, pin code or badge.

The first phase of the installation process will start very soon.
