New parking meters to accept dollar bills
The city will replace roughly 800 parking meters during the next fiscal year.
The new models will accept dollar bills, said Jill Stedem, spokeswoman for the Public Works Department. Payment will still be received at each individual meter, so there will be no need for separate pay boxes.
The total cost for the new meters will be around $112,000, according to City Manager Bill Watkins' proposed budget.
"The meters that we had purchased previously, we can't get anymore, and we cant get the parts for them anymore," Stedem said.
The last time Columbia replaced parking meters was in 1999 and 2000.
The city manages 1,836 parking meters, and Stedem said the new ones won't all be installed in the same area because they're part of general meter maintenance.
