PGA Championship Draws Thousands of Fans, Cars

As thousands of cars descend on the Atlanta Athletic Club for day one of the 2011 PGA Championship, Atlanta-based Lanier Parking Solutions is showing them the way. Lanier is the PGA Championship's selected parking management vendor for the third time. It also managed parking at the event in 2002 and 2004.
"Our efficiency, coordination, and communication enable us to satisfy the PGA's needs," said Lanier's Atlanta City Manager Steven Taff. "Six months of planning combined with our excellent crew will ensure another success."

At the peak of each day, about 130 Lanier employees will be on site, Taff said, including permit checkers, flaggers, managers, and supervisors. During the seven-day event, they will direct about 13,000 cars per day into six lots. Lanier must be prepared to make adjustments in staff based on crowd flow.

"We get a surge in traffic based on when the top players are teeing off," Taff said. "If Tiger Woods or Rory McIlroy are teeing off in the morning on Thursday, they will tee off in the afternoon on Friday, so we will adjust for that."

The Atlanta Athletic Club sits in the city of Johns Creek next to Georgia State Road 141, which is a busy artery on a normal day. Lanier coordinates with local police to ensure cars can enter and exit the grounds quickly, Taff said.

Lanier has managed parking and transportation programs for some of the highest profile special events, conventions, and sporting and political events in the world. These include last year's Winter Olympics in Vancouver, the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, the 2000 Democratic National Convention, and the 2000 Super Bowl. Lanier manages parking at nearly a dozen event complexes including Amway Arena in Orlando, Verizon Amphitheaters in Georgia and North Carolina, The World of Coca-Cola in Atlanta, and the Georgia Aquarium.
