Chaotic parking in the departures zone at Düsseldorf airport is now a thing of the past. Since 1 September 2018 an ingenious new Scheidt & Bachmann solution has been in place at the airport’s arrivals area as well at the entrance and exit to the so-called Kiss & Fly zone.
Free parking in the departures area has always been limited to a few minutes, but compliance was rarely monitored before. Motorists often exploited this, leaving their cars for long periods of time without paying – often double parked. What is more, drivers were often recommended to use the airport as an alternative route when there was heavy traffic on the adjacent A44 motorway. In spite of the ample parking available – 80 spaces – this resulted in considerable congestion and indeed chaos at times.
Since the introduction of the Scheidt & Bachmann solution, motorists now draw a ticket from one of the new control devices at the entrance to the departures level. The first 10 minutes in the Kiss & Fly zone are free of charge. “We want to make sure passengers can still be dropped off at the terminal without undue time pressure. That’s why we opted for a solution that allows drop-offs but where a fee is charged for extended parking. The free-access time is enough to stop at the terminal, unload luggage and say goodbye to the departing passenger,” says Thomas Schnalke, management spokesperson of Düsseldorf airport. “This is a well-established system that is used at many other airports, too.” If a user exceeds the 10-minute free period in the Kiss & Fly zone, a fee has to be paid. EUR 5.00 is charged from the 10th to the 15th minute, followed by a fee of EUR 3.00 per minute after this. The maximum permitted parking period is 30 minutes.
Guests can conveniently pay at one of the eight new pay stations set up in the zone, as well as at the existing machines. If users have a debit card, credit card or smartphone with NFC function, they can exit directly and make a contactless payment at one of the exit control devices as they do so.
An average of 26,000 transactions are handled by the new entervo system per day, making it one of the most highly frequented barrier systems in Germany. Six months after the system was introduced, it can definitely be seen to be having the desired effect. “The new barrier system works extremely well – traffic is much less congested than before. The processes are now well established”, says airport director Schnalke. Düsseldorf airport is already planning more improvements in collaboration with Scheidt & Bachmann, including a vehicle access system based on automatic number plate detection.
