Top Trends Impacting the Parking Industry

Once thought of as the future of parking, green and sustainable parking solutions is now parking for today. Parking professionals agree the demand for green parking and sustainable parking solutions is one of the most impactful on the industry. In a recent International Parking Institute poll, 36% of parking professionals stated that going green is a top trend impacting the industry today. Of all the responses, this ranked it second in the industry, only behind finding ways to increase parking revenues. (IPI 2011 Emerging Trends in Parking)
However, the two are not mutually exclusive. As everyone is talking about going Green, consumers seek out environmentally friendly businesses, and companies are trying to improve their image and have corporate social responsibility. With solutions such as LED lighting, parking facilities can reduce electricity costs and consumption thus improving profits. Other green solutions including installing electric vehicle charging stations, recycling stations, and parking for bicycles will both improve the green image of the facility and drive customers to your location, simply based on the fact the facility is making an effort to be more sustainable and green.
Switching to an energy efficient lighting system by installing LED lights is one of the easiest ways for parking facilities to reduce energy consumption. LED lights use up to 80% less energy than other traditional lighting and are more sustainable. Furthermore, environmentally friendly LEDs do not contain any toxic mercury that is costly to recycle and an environmental hazard. Green Garage Associates will work with facilities and the attached parking structures to reduce energy consumption through the way of lighting. Lighting costs can be reduced up to 80% with the use of LEDs as opposed to other lighting systems. Not only will can the use of LED lights reduce electric bills up to 60%, maintenance costs are significantly reduced as the lifetime of LEDs can be as much as 80,000 hours.

Related to the demand for sustainable solutions, 19% of polltakers stated improving accommodations for electric vehicles and charging stations has the most impact on the parking industry. Based on the current market penetration of electric vehicles, it is recommended parking facilities have at least 1 charging station per every 250 spaces, with a way to increase accommodations in the future. Green Garage Associates prefer to follow the idea of Charge Cars, Not People and feels charging for use of electric vehicle charging further barriers the adoption of the technology while it is still in early stages of implementation. We see the Juice Bar charger as an amenity to draw customers into your facility. This appeases the demand for sustainable solutions, the need for electric vehicle infrastructure and also increases revenue; Tackling 3 out of the 10 impacts on the parkingindustry.

Following the standards of the GreenParking Council, implementing green programs recommended will give the garage Demonstrator Site status, with the potential to become a Certified Green Garage; One of the best ways for a parking facility to display corporate social responsibility and its interest in the environment.
