Legal Council, In-house Commercial and Data Protection (Bristol, UK)

We are looking for a Commercial and Data Protection Legal Counsel with particular experience in the payment technology sector, to join our highly regarded team in Bristol. This is an exciting opportunity to join a leading UK Fintech company, advising on a range of commercial agreements and data protection within a dynamic and supportive environment.

What Will I Be Doing?

You will be working across a diverse scope of commercial and data protection matters. The role primarily involves assisting our US-based General Counsel and our UK-based sales team to negotiate commercial agreements, including payment service provider agreements and EMV software license agreements with merchants and distributors. You will assist our General Counsel and the data security team by providing data protection compliance advice, from an internal compliance perspective (including the development and management of the company's data protection policies and overseeing data protection compliance projects) and with regards to customer due diligence. You will also be responsible for maintaining and developing the business's template agreements, contract review guidebooks and providing training to other teams.


Essential Skills

  • 5-7 years of relevant experience in a commercial technology and data protection role, ideally in either a private law firm recognized for its focus on the Fintech sector or in-house at a payment service provider or similar Fintech environment, or comparable.
  • Highly developed understanding of data protection regulation, case law and guidance, and ability to stay up-to-date with the latest developments.
  • Experience managing comprehensive data protection compliance projects.
  • Responsibility for development and management of company data protection policies.
  • Ability to provide rapid, practical, concise business-oriented legal/commercial contract advice directly to colleagues at all levels of the business.
  • Ability to draft and close commercial agreements with minimal support from senior staff.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong analytical and research skills required.

Desirable Skills

  • Strong interest in and awareness of SAAS, the payment industry sector and associated legislation.
  • Experience with US legal contracts.
  • Awareness of international data protection regimes.
