Q-Free is a highly reputed technology provider in the road tolling business which has delivered advanced 5.8 GHz CEN-DSRC solutions for both on and off vehicle equipment since the mid 90’s.

The solutions are mainly characterized as compact battery-operated microwave transponders, manufactured in very high volumes. The solutions are generally constrained on cost, size and near-zero power consumption.

To maintain this position, we are now strengthening our R&D department in Trondheim by establishing a team of specialists within the field of integrated circuits design.

This team will focus on developing IP highly specialized for extremely low power operation in wireless designs. These solutions will then have to be realized in silicon in cooperation with world-class IC design houses.

The team will also have responsibilities for FPGA based solutions found in the more complex roadside products.

Overall, the candidate will work in close collaboration with the RF design team to specify and deliver ASICs in deep submicron CMOS technology. This represents a unique opportunity to explore technology boundaries at IC level while at the same time defining the end products and systems.

As IC Architect, You Will: 

  • Drive architecture and technology discussions with ASIC sub-suppliers and the internal CTO organization
  • Gather product requirements and distill them into a system architecture including requirement specs for the analog, digital and software parts of the design
  • Develop such system architectures for complete ICs or IP modules in a mixed-signal environment
  • Make effort, area, performance, and cost estimations
  • Interface with internal and external IP and technology providers
  • Technically lead the design team through the implementation, verification, and documentation phase of the project life cycle
  • Drive verification processes in cooperation with external ASIC suppliers.


  • MSc/B.Sc in Electronics Engineering or equivalent
  • 10+ years of hands-on experience in chip-level and circuit-level architecture definition, RTL design, and verification

Desired Experience: 

  • Experience in the design with multi-power and multi-clock domain constraints
  • Experience with low power, low voltage designs
  • Experience in design and verification of digital functions for Mixed-Signal ASICs such as A/D Converters, D/A Converters, and/or RF transceivers is a plus
