New Thinking about Car Parking Technology

New Thinking about Car Parking Technology

Electric Airplanes

The demand for air travel continues its rapid increase as standards of living rise. Theoretically, the all-electric airplane uses electricity for propulsion rather than conventional turbofan engines. But why?

Using electricity promises to reduce significantly the consumption of fossil fuels and the pollutants generated by conventional engines. However, first impressions are that the electric plane would require too many batteries and be too heavy to get off the ground. Even batteries of the future seem to hold little hope to make the concept successful. New thinking is required to advance the technology.

That new thinking includes generating electricity on-board the airplane rather than storing it in batteries. Burning fossil fuels to generate electricity to propel an airplane is potentially far more efficient compared to burning the same fuels in conventional aircraft engines. New thinking suggests using ultra-low temperatures or superconductivity to minimize the size and weight of wiring and electrical/ electronic components greatly. New thinking also leads to considering radically different ways to generate electricity, to integrate super-cooling, fuel and energy storage and so forth.

Automated Car Parking Systems

Similarly, the demand for car parking spaces continues to increase as populations and living standards rise. Automated parking systems (APS) eliminate driving and drivers from the car parking process. But why?

Fifty percent or more of the ground area needed for conventional car parks or parking garages goes to facilitate driving cars to and from parking spaces and having big parking spaces to accommodate drivers. First impressions might be that APS make car parking slow and complex. New thinking has already advanced car-parking technology.

Except for the size of the objects to be stored, APS are not fundamentally different than automated storage and retrieval technology effectively used in many industries including automotive and manufacturing. Furthermore, Skyline dispels the notion that APS are slow and complex with industryleading performance and availability. All of this is driving new thinking.

Increasingly, planners, designers and developers are re-thinking ways to make car parking more profitable, more pleasant, safer and more sustainable using APS. No longer are APS simply interesting experiments or an alternative when conventional parking systems are impossible or impractical. Skyline is driving new thinking the best way we can...with
simple, fast and reliable APS designs.
